Persistence Scholarship Renamed
We are proud to announce that at our June 26, 2025 Alumni Chapter meeting, the Raleigh/Wake Alumni Chapter renamed it’s Persistence Scholarship Award to the “Phyllis Banks Fulton – Persistence Award”, in memory and honor of one of our longtime and dedicated Alumni.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), was held close in the heart of Phyllis Matilda Banks Fulton, and her “Aggie Pride” was always on display. Phyllis was born on February 15, 1948, in Elizabeth City, NC. where she graduated from P.W. Moore High School in 1965, and then attended NC A&T, where she majored in Social Services graduating in 1969. It was there that she also met the love of her life, Mr. Earnest L. Fulton. She later earned her Master of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1980.
Phyllis was a dedicated member of the Blue & Gold Marching Machine and remained a lifelong avid supporter, and for that dedication, she earned the President’s Award from the NC A&T Raleigh/Wake Alumni Association in 2018.
Phyllis had a distinguished 50-year career in social work, until retirement in October 2013. Throughout her career, Phyllis dedicated herself to advocating for the most vulnerable members of society. She worked with foster children, child abuse victims, facilitated adoptions, secured grants for social services programs, and coordinated these programs across North Carolina. For her hard work, determination, and tireless efforts, in October 2013 she was honored with North Carolina’s highest State Honor, “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine”. Phyllis” service to humanity was also entered into the “Congressional Record of the U.S. House of Representatives” in April 2025.
In retirement, Phyllis continued to serve the Raleigh/Wake Alumni Chapter with her creativity, enthusiasm and drive to help the Chapter support our University and A&T students. She had a keen understanding that the best way to lend support is through fundraising, and led several successful fundraisers for our Chapter. She also knew how to make them fun, such as the “Valentine’s Love Challenge” designed to celebrate love for your significant other, and your love for our A&T Alumni Chapter. Donations made through this challenge were targeted to support various Chapter initiatives. Phyllis was also a talented artist who enjoyed ceramics, sewing, baking, and painting. The Chapter’s favorite was her delicious Rum cake.
